SKI INFORMATION

Beginners
The idea that Val d'Isère is for experts only is just not true. Far from it - there are several good nursery slopes, number of lifts that are absolutely free for skiing debutants, and when you're ready to progress, a modern lift system with easy-to-use chairlifts that will take you to a wide selection of easy green ones in the heart of the Espace Killy. The ski schools are highly recommended every year so you'll be in good hands.

Intermediates
A true intermediates' paradise, Val d'Isère is big-time skiing country. From the gentle cruising blue and red runs of the Bellevarde and La Daille sectors to the Le Fornet glacier and the massive ski domain of Tignes and La Grande Motte, there is endless choice at every level.

Advanced
Val d'Isère must be included in every list of the best skiing in Europe for its giant moguls, steep black runs, couloirs and not least for its sensational off-piste. Try the Olympic Men's Downhill run, the waist-high Solaise bumps just above the village or the powder bowls of the Tour de Charvet.

Glacier skiing
With both the Grand Motte and Pissaillas glaciers to choose from, there's a great choice of high-altitude skiing. Up on the Grand Motte Glacier, there's a fantastic 20km of piste for all abilities, whereas the Pissaillas Glacier offers a range of blue and red runs starting from a height of over 3,100m. Offers great early & late season & summer snow sure skiing.

Cross-country skiing
There are six different track loops in Val d'Isère, all with magnificent views of the Vanoise. Most tracks are free to use, except for the glacier trail, L'Ouilliette, which is accessed via a ski bus. There are loads more trails over in Tignes, too, at the bottom of the slopes, in the villages and around the lake.

Off-piste
For French off-piste, the Espace Killy ski area is one of the best around. Both Tignes and Val d'Isère are known for having easily accessible off-piste areas from the lift system, meaning you can spend more time looking downhill, than hiking up. One of the best areas is around La Daille.
